Reykjavik - The parliament of Iceland has rejected a proposal to offer US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden Icelandic citizenship, a parliament spokesperson said on Friday.
The 63-seat parliament late on Thursday voted against the proposal, which had been made by six members of the opposition, including Birgitta Jonsdottir of the Pirate Party and Ogmundur Jonasson, a former interior minister and member of the Left-Green Movement.
In an entry on her blog, Jonsdottir posted a message attributed to Snowden in which he said he had "been left de facto stateless”.
Iceland's centre-right government had already said that Snowden would not be given special treatment, noting that an asylum application would have to be made on Icelandic soil.

To: The Icelandic Parliament
I want to extend my gratitude to the Icelandic parliament for considering my request for Icelandic citizenship. I have been left defacto-stateless by my own government after communicating with the public. I appreciate that Iceland, a small but significant country in the world community, shows such courage and commitment to its higher laws and ideals. I am heartened to feel the support of the Icelandic people whom I know have a long history of standing firm, even under threats of aggression, when basic principles are at stake.

The Irish Post
THE Irish government has received a request from the US to arrest fugitive US intelligence analyst Edward Snowden.

The provisional arrest warrant is now being handled by the Gardaí.

It has been issued as a pre-emptive strike against any effort by the US futigive to evade US authorities by flying from Moscow to Havana on a flight that stops off at Shannon for refueling, reports the Irish Times.

Under the Extradition Act 1965, the warrant would enable Gardaí to arrest Snowden and, pending a court hearing, he could be held in Ireland for up to 18 days.

From Reuters
(Reuters) - Bolivia offered asylum on Saturday to former U.S. spy agency contractor Edward Snowden, joining leftist allies Venezuela and Nicaragua in defiance of Washington, which is demanding his arrest for divulging details of secret U.S. surveillance programs.
Snowden, 30, is believed to be holed up in the transit area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport and has been trying to find a country that would take him since he landed from Hong Kong on June 23.
Bolivian President Evo Morales had said earlier this week that he would consider granting asylum to Snowden. But he took a harder line on Saturday, angered that some European countries banned his plane from their airspace this week on suspicion it carried Snowden.
. . . Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro also offered refuge to Snowden late Friday and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said his country had received an asylum request and could agree to it "if circumstances permit."
